Aspect Of Summer Flowers

By admin On July 22, 2008 No Comments

When you are thinking of growing some easy summer flowers, plant the seeds during late spring. The warm soil is good for germination and the spring rains bring about growth of the seedlings. To name only a few of the common annual summer flowers: Zinnias, sunflowers, cosmos, petunias, bachelor buttons, balsam, alyssum, marigolds, vinca, poertuluca and lobelia.

If you want the summer flowers to bloom really well make sure that they get full sunshine for more than 6 hours in a day. Southwest and desert climate zones are hot areas. So the afternoon shade would be right. Take the help of the shovel to turn over the soil, after digging it down for about six inches. All this is to prepare the soil. According to directions mentioned in the package, mix some compost, rotten manure and fertilizer. Then turn this mixture over with the soil. You must plant the tallest flower plants at the back followed subsequently by heights with the shortest in front. Follow this pattern if the flower bed has a wall or fence behind it. The tall flowers then lean against the wall behind and would not put any shade over the small plants.

In case the flower bed is situated in the center of the yard, the pattern to be followed is the taller plants in the center followed by middle height plants. This should then be followed by the smaller plants which form the outermost ring. Let your imagination run wild when it is a matter of colors. To make it look like a meadow, plant several colors at once or use coordinated colors. Pastels look gorgeous. Talking about colors, why not select two opposite and bright colors like red and blue? Fill in with lots of white or orange and purple with a lot of cream or white. There are various colors all belonging to the blue family. Pick them up and throw in a bit of yellow randomly.

Birds and bugs take away a lot of your seeds. So planting has to be done much closer (3 times in fact) to each other as the instruction booklet says. Put a layer of mulch on top after you have covered the seeds as directed. Then water them well. Excess water is as bad as no water. So do not water your plants routinely every day but only when they are dry. Once the seeds have sprouted, do not start your thinning for spacing immediately. Wait till at least 4 leaves have sprouted. The perfect distance which should be kept between the flowers is shorter flowers 6 inches apart and medium around 12 inches, with taller ones about 18 inches.

The most magnificent aspect of summer flowers is that the more you pluck, the more they flourish. From the point of view of the plant, the purpose of flowering is to spread seeds. Once that purpose is served, the plant stops blooming but when you remove the flowers the plant continues to bloom. Once the first bloom is over, reduce the flowers in half. The plant would bloom a second time, except it would not be as flashy as the first bloom, though beautiful. Plant the seeds of summer flowers late spring, if you want to be assured of an amazing display all summer long.
